Crushed shell driveways in Teaticket
The name comes from the Wampanoag Tataket, roughly: at the principal tidal stream.
Teaticket sits between Falmouth village and the sound, and for most of its history it was farmland rather than houses. This was part of the soil-rich middle of the town, the ground that made Falmouth a serious strawberry producer at the turn of the last century.
Why old farmland matters underfoot
Ground that was worked for generations is not the same as untouched outwash. It has been plowed, enriched, and in places filled. That can mean a deeper layer of soft, organic topsoil than you would expect, and organic material is the worst thing to build a driveway on because it keeps compressing.

Crushed stone is often the steadier choice on the older lots here, where soft worked ground sits deeper than usual. A heavier, angular surface is more forgiving of a base that has taken effort to get right.
That said, once the excavation is done properly, either material will hold.
