A crushed shell driveway is a loose surface driveway where the top layer is crushed seashell rather than stone. It goes down over a compacted gravel base, the same way a gravel driveway does, and it is the surface most people picture when they picture a Cape Cod house. We lay shell walkways and paths the same way, just narrower.
We install what we deliver. A load tipped on the verge without a base prepared under it is not a driveway, it is a pile you will be raking for years, so we do the whole job or none of it.
Other names for the same thing
People call these seashell driveways, sea shell driveways, clam shell driveways, crushed oyster shell driveways, white shell driveways and shell gravel driveways. It is all the same work, and if you are describing yours with a word not on that list we will still know what you mean.

New shell driveway installation
A full build, from bare ground up: the driveway is excavated and graded, a compacted gravel base goes down, and the crushed shell is laid over it in lifts and compacted so it knits together instead of scattering.
Grade and excavate
We strip the driveway down several inches and shape it so water runs off it rather than sitting in it. Getting the pitch right at this stage is what decides whether the driveway holds up.
Lay and compact the base
A gravel base goes in and gets compacted. Shell laid straight onto soft ground sinks and disappears. The base is what carries the weight of the cars.
Spread the shell in lifts
Crushed shell goes down in layers rather than one deep dump, and each layer is compacted before the next. That is what gives you a firm surface instead of a loose one you sink into.
Edge and finish
We finish the edges so the shell stays on the driveway and out of the lawn and beds, and leave the surface raked out even.

Shell driveway refresh and regrading
For a shell driveway that has thinned out, rutted, or gone patchy. We regrade the surface, correct the spots where water has started to sit, and lay fresh crushed shell over the top so it looks and drives like new.
Look at why it went
A driveway that keeps rutting in the same place usually has a drainage or base problem underneath. We check that first, rather than burying it under new shell and having it come back.
Regrade and fill
Ruts, low spots and washouts get pulled back level and the pitch corrected so water sheds properly again.
Top off with fresh shell
New crushed shell over the regraded surface, compacted in, bringing the depth and the white back.

Shell or stone, the section through a finished driveway is the same. What changes is the wearing course on top.

The same shell makes a good walkway, and on a property where the driveway is already shell it is the obvious way to tie a front path or a side path into it. One material, one color, and the whole approach reads as deliberate rather than assembled.
A path needs less depth than a driveway, because it carries people rather than cars, but it still needs a compacted base. Shell laid straight onto soil sinks into the lawn within a season and then you are picking it out of the grass every time you mow.
Edging matters more here than anywhere. A narrow path has far more edge for every square foot of surface, and shell is the material most inclined to wander. Cobble, granite or steel, set at the right height, is what keeps the line crisp.
